March Hare: Why don’t you start from the beginning?
Mad Hatter: Yes, and when you reach the end…stop.

I guess I started down the rabbit hole my freshman year of college when I signed up for a Facebook account. Or maybe before that, in 6th grade when I downloaded AOL’s instant messenger. Either way, soon after I had a Facebook account I was on Myspace. Not long after that I signed up for YouTube, Flickr, Last.fm and now there’s LinkedIn, Twitter, FriendFeed…I’m addicted.

In college I started working for Sitewire as an intern and after graduation, when I came on full time, my role changed. I started monitoring a few clients’ online brand reputation through blogs, forums, micromedia, etc. This eventually expanded to take in more clients and now I’ve begun working on strategic plans to get our clients involved in the conversation.

This means that social media, for me, isn’t just for fun, and it’s also not just my job. It’s both. To me, It’s not just vague theory and strategy, it’s real things that my friends and I use in our daily lives. I think it’s time to bring a more personal point of view to the newest topics and trends we’re all discussing all day long and that’s where this blog comes in.

I wanted to share my experiences in what I’m calling Socialmedialand – mainly because sometimes I feel like Alice. I’ve found myself in a totally new world that is accelerating and changing at a pace unparalleled in human history. The rules haven’t been clearly defined so we’re free to make them up, change them, mold them and evolve them as we see fit.

The things I write here will be the explorations of social media including thoughts on what the rules are (or aren’t), ideas on how to shape it and use it, examples of things that have gone right or wrong and more (got to leave room to evolve right?) The topics will range from my opinion on the latest trends, best practices, how to implement strategy, what tools provide the best metrics and what it all means for brands as well as individuals.
